Material Shortages add to the SME housebuilder burden
The major barriers affecting SME housebuilders:
- 94% agreed delays in securing planning permission
- 90% believe a lack of resource in local authority planning departments is a major barrier
- 78% believe the supply and cost of materials is a major barrier
- 59% think the same of the supply and cost of labour
- This is a significant increase on 2020’s figures of 20% and 19% respectively
Materials supply chain issues caused by:
- Uneven demand due to Covid restrictions
- Suez Canal closure earlier this year
- Big freeze in Texas last winter
- Disruption at Chinese ports
- HGV driver shortage
- Energy crisis
